Joseph Edward Stevens, Jr. (June 23, 1928 – December 18, 1998) was a United States federal judge. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Stevens received a B.A. from Yale University in 1949 and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1952. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1952 to 1960. He was an Active duty from 1952 to 1955. He was in private practice in Kansas City, Missouri from 1955 to 1980. Stevens was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri. Stevens was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1981, to a seat vacated by William R. Collinson. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on September 16, 1981, and received his commission on September 18, 1981. He served as chief judge from 1992-1995. He assumed senior status on July 1, 1995. Stevens served in that capacity until his death. Stevens was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri.
